Yoga Therapy

Yoga Therapy is personalised yoga tuition designed to address health on all levels by the application of yoga and gentle manipulation. It retains and respects yoga’s ancient principles, combines it with modern medicinal knowledge and works holistically on all levels of the mind and body. Although clients may start Yoga Therapy with the specific intention of solving their health problems, they will find that they benefit also in many other ways.

If you are in any doubt about your medical condition you should consult your medical practitioner before undertaking any form of exercise or therapy.

Physical postures: Simple yoga postures gently stretch and strengthen muscles, improving mobility, flexibility, respiration, circulation, digestion and elimination. These consist of both simple movements and held postures, which promote a general sense of health and well-being.Breath Therapy: Yoga breathing exercises can be practiced anywhere and at any time. Awareness of the breath is central to all forms of yoga and promotes calmness, helping to focus the mind, and relieving stress and mental fatigue.Relaxation Therapy (sense withdrawal, concentration, meditation, sound work and sleep): Learning how to relax is a central element of Yoga Therapy. Relaxation is the body’s way of recharging, and helps to ease physical and mental tension. Relaxation techniques encourage us to step back and look objectively at our habitual patterns of behaviour, helping us to cope better with situations that put our body and mind under strain.

Massage Therapy and Manipulation: Some techniques include Assisted Yoga Manipulation, which is like Thai Massage in that involves helping the client to stretch a little deeper with the guidance of the therapist.

By tailoring yoga practices to individual needs, whilst taking medical considerations into account, yoga therapy is more effective than general yoga practice as a safe means of aiding medical conditions and medical research provides increasing evidence that yoga therapy is effective. Yoga therapy can also promote positive health for pregnancy and childbirth.

Yoga Therapy promotes the innate healing resources of the body, helping restore the proper functioning of the various bodily systems. Yoga Therapy can be practised in conjunction with any medical treatments you are already receiving, and also in tandem with other complementary therapies. No prior experience of yoga is necessary before starting and I emphasise all movements should be done in respect of your own abilities – there is no ‘perfect pose’ in yoga, only a healthy one that’s right for you.

Vernette’s Yoga Therapy covers techniques and knowledge gained from the study of:

Anatomy & Physiology, Breath Therapy (Pranayama), Postures (Asanas), Assisted Yoga Manipulation (Thai Yoga Massage), Psychology (CBT, Hypnotherapy), Relaxation Therapy (meditation, mindfulness, soundwork, visualistation and yoga nidra), First Aid, Fitness Instruction and Nutrition Coaching.

Consultation

At your consultation, I will assesses your condition and ask questions about your health and lifestyle. Based on this information, I will then work out a personalised program of yoga therapy practices to meet your needs that will be practiced over a number of weekly 1:2:1 sessions consisting of just yoga or with additional therapies.

Between the lessons, it is advisable practice at home to consolidate what you have learned. You can expect marked improvements with many conditions in the first few weeks, though health benefits often continue to increase over months and even years.

Before practice, please make sure you haven't eaten a large meal in the last two hours, only light snacks or food. Phone off and to make sure as best as one can that you will not be disturbed by phone or door - this is YOUR time, your gift to yourself, to step away from all those daily things.
